Top female composers kick off chorus’ season

- — Joshua Kosman

The Bay Area chorus Volti is always a go-to source for exciting and innovative new music. And for its seasonopening program, the group has tapped two of the music world’s most inventive composers for a double bill of world premieres.

“Ochre,” a multi-movement score by Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, promises an exploration of earth, geology, color and more, all channeled through her distinctively expressive sensibilities. And from San Francisco composer Pamela Z comes a newly reimagined live version of her “Ink,” which was originally performed digitally during the pandemic shutdown.

Valérie Saint-Agathe, the ever-busy artistic director of the San Francisco Girls Chorus and chorus master for the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, makes her debut with the group as guest conductor.
