Making S.F. green
Regarding “Maps show which S.F. neighborhoods have the most ‘street trees' — and what kind” (SFChronicle.com, Nov. 16): Thank you for Nami Sumida's informative story about San Francisco's urban forest. Though the city's Bureau of Urban Forestry does good work with the inadequate budget allocated to it, it does not plant “every street tree” — Friends of the Urban Forest, which was founded in 1981 in response to the city's neglect of its urban forest, actually plants more.
Though San Francisco lags behind most major U.S. cities in the extent of our tree canopy coverage, some of our neighborhoods are especially under-forested, and that's where Friends of the Urban Forest focuses its efforts.
We invite San Franciscans to choose a species that we'll plant adjacent to their homes and businesses. Volunteers are welcome to work with us; see www. friendsoftheurbanforest.org for more information.
