Feinstein should resign
Regarding “Feinstein can end tenure with respect” (Open Forum, Nov. 21): I’ve voted for Dianne Feinstein in every election she’s contested, including the witless effort to recall her as mayor of San Francisco in 1983. But I strongly disagree with Gil Duran’s view that she should stay in office until her term ends two years from now.
Her decline is indisputable and, sadly, irreversible. Suppose she follows Duran’s recommendation to remain in office anyway. In that case, California’s effective representation will suffer, and we’ll have to go through a messy, expensive primary battle to fill Feinstein’s seat when it becomes vacant.
Gov. Gavin Newsom won’t appoint anyone Feinstein disapproves of — they’re both Democratic ex-mayors of San Francisco, after all. Feinstein should resign this winter so Newsom’s appointee will have a two-year record to take to the voters in 2024
