Connecticut Sun name White as head coach

The Connecticut Sun hired Stephanie White to be their head coach.

White succeeds Curt Miller, who left to coach Los Angeles last month. She has a combined 15 seasons of experience as a player and coach in the WNBA, most recently as the head coach of the Indiana Fever in 2015-2016.

White left the Fever to take over the program at Vanderbilt. She was the head coach there from 2016 through ’21.

College football: Virginia canceled its game against rival Virginia Tech scheduled for Saturday following the slaying of three football players on campus just more than a week ago.

The university made the announcement Monday night, a day after a nearly two-hour memorial service to remember Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry. The three were fatally shot after a field trip to see a play in Washington. Two others were wounded.

Virginia also canceled its game last Saturday against No. 23 Coastal Carolina.

NFL: The Denver Broncos waived running back Melvin Gordon on Monday, a day after his fumble at the goal line proved costly in their 22-16 overtime loss to the Los Vegas Raiders that sent them tumbling into the AFC West basement at 3-7 . ... Head coach Sean McVay said that the Rams are still trying to determine whether quarterback Matthew Stafford will go back into the concussion protocol after leaving Sunday’s game early. The Rams have not confirmed Stafford had a concussion two weeks ago, when he first went into the protocol. “You can’t be too careful, (but) we’ll wait and see what the actual diagnosis is,” McVay said. Colleges: The WCC Presidents’ Council has appointed Connie Hurlbut to serve as the conference’s interim commissioner. Hurlbut, who has served as a senior associate commissioner for the conference since 2017, assumes the role of interim commissioner Dec. 1.

Hurlbut is a longtime collegiate athletics administrator, who has served as executive director of the Patriot League, and in senior leadership roles with the WAC, the WNBA and the Ivy League. She previously served as the WCC’s interim commissioner prior to the appointment of WCC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez, who is leaving to become commissioner of the Mountain West Conference.
