An Alameda County sheriff’s deputy is being investigated for alleged DUI driving after he crashed a county vehicle, rear-ending a tractor trailer, according to authorities.

Deputy Michael Ziller was hauling back a grill from a sanctioned sheriff’s office memorial barbecue event in Livermore around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 when he collided with the tractor trailer on Interstate 580 near the Vasco Road exit, an Alameda County Sheriff’s spokesperson said.

The CHP cited Ziller on suspicion of driving under the influence, the sheriff’s office said. He was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and submitted a Blood Alcohol Content test.

A criminal investigation by the California Highway Patrol is still ongoing and the Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office is conducting an internal investigation into the incident, the sheriff ’s spokesperson added.

Ziller is currently on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation and the results of the BAC test.
