Ambulances rushed two injured people to hospitals Thursday after a chain-reaction crash created major traffic delays for eastbound Bay Bridge motorists, San Francisco Fire Department officials said.

Emergency crews had cleared all eastbound lanes just after 2 p.m., about an hour after the crashes caused severe traffic delays.

Eighteen people were hurt in the crashes in the Interstate 80 tunnel across from Treasure Island, but only two people were taken to the hospital, fire officials said. None of the injuries was lifethreatening, according to the department. Eight adults and eight children were injured.

The incident started when a vehicle crashed into a wall at about 12:40 p.m., causing as many as five other vehicles to crash inside the tunnel, according to initial reports.

One caller told authorities of being cut off by another driver and crashing, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Motorists reported major delays while emergency crews cleared the road and ambulance teams helped the injured.
