DOHA, Qatar — The show is over already for the Qatar team, which Friday was eliminated from the World Cup less than a week after it opened the tournament and launched the first version of soccer's biggest event in the Middle East.

Qatar lost 3-1 to Senegal for its second straight defeat to become the first team eliminated from Group A. It also became the quickest host nation to depart the tournament in its 92-year history.

South Africa had been the only other home team to fail to make it out of the group stage in 2010 — but it managed a win and a draw. By contrast, Qatar has looked nervous and overwhelmed Friday and in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Ecuador right after a glittering opening ceremony.

Senegal got its campaign back on track after losing its opener to Netherlands.

Iran 2, Wales 0: Rouzbeh Cheshmi scored in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time to break a scoreless stalemate and Iran went on to defeat 10-man Wales in a Group B match in Al Rayyan. Cheshmi's strike from outside the box was just beyond the diving reach of Wales backup goalkeeper Danny Ward, who was pressed into duty when starter Wayne Hennessey was sent off in the 86th minute for a high challenge. Ramin Rezaeian added a second goal in the 11th minute of stoppage time and Iran wildly celebrated as Welsh players dropped to the field in disbelief. Iran, which fell 6-2 to England in its opener to fall to last place in the group, can advance by beating the U.S. on Tuesday. Netherlands 1, Ecuador 1: In the other Group A game at Al Rayyan, Ecuador captain Enner Valencia scored his third goal of the Cup early in the second half after Cody Gakpo had fired Group leader Netherlands into the lead in the sixth. A draw against Senegal on Tuesday would send Ecuador to the round of 16.

Briefly: Neymar has been ruled out of Brazil's last two group stage matches with a sprained ankle . ... Tensions ran high at the Iran-Wales match as fans supporting the Iranian government harassed those protesting against it and stadium security seized flags, T-shirts and other items expressing support for the protest movement that has gripped the Islamic Republic.
