Story line: The Spartans’ final home game of the season features SJSU quarterback Chevan Cordeiro going up against his former team. Cordeiro was one of a reported 19 Hawaii players who transferred after last season, most of whom were upset with the culture created by head coach Todd Graham, who resigned in January. San Jose State has won the past two meetings with Hawaii, meaning the Spartans have held the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy, which goes to the winner of the matchup. Tomey, who died in 2019, spent 10 seasons (1977-86) as Hawaii’s head coach and five (2005-09) as San Jose State’s head coach.
What to watch
• A Honolulu native, Cordeiro spent four seasons with the
Rainbow Warriors. “It’s going to be weird, but it’s going to be fun,” Cordeiro said of playing against his former teammates. “They’re my boys, but during the game, we’re not going to be boys. But after, we’re going to hug it out. They’re my brothers for life still.” Cordeiro has thrown for 2,677 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. He also has run for eight scores.
• The Spartans have lost their past two games, and allowed five sacks in each loss. Cordeiro figures to have more time to throw against Hawaii, which has recorded the fewest sacks (16) in the Mountain West Conference.
• San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan was on Tomey’s staff for his entire tenure with the Spartans. “I do think about him every day because of what I do and the role I have here at San Jose State and just what he was for me,” Brennan said. “I love Dick Tomey, I miss him and I’m very, very grateful for the influence and the impact that he had on my life.”
