Japantown YMCA damaged in blaze
A closed San Francisco YMCA outpost suffered major damage after a fire broke out on the premises Sunday, authorities said.
The cause of the fire at the Buchanan YMCA remained under investigation and no injuries were reported, according to a statement from the San Francisco Fire Department.
The facility suffered “major damage” to its exterior and “moderate damage to two floors” inside the building, said Jonathan Baxter, the department's spokesperson.
Responding firefighters contained the one-alarm fire around 1:12 p.m. after flames broke at the Japantown facility near Buchanan and Geary, according to SFFD.
The facility, which previously offered indoor fitness classes and programs for seniors, was temporarily closed at the time of the fire, according to the YMCA website.
The YMCA of San Francisco did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
