Toronto’s quick goals pave way for road win

Auston Matthews and William Nylander scored 51 seconds apart in the first period, Mitch Marner extended his point streak to 17 games and the Maple Leafs beat the Red Wings 4-2 Monday night in Detroit.

Rasmus Sandin also scored and Matt Murray made 38 saves for the Maple Leafs, who have won a season-high four straight and earned a point in nine consecutiv­e games.

Moritz Seider had an early goal for Detroit, finishing a four-shot flurry, but the lead didn't last long. Matthews' wrist shot beat Ville Husso glove side a few minutes later and Nylander scored on a power play to put the Maple Leafs ahead 2-1 midway through the first period.

Marner scored to extend his point streak — one short of the franchise record — in the opening minute of the second. Sandin put Toronto up 4-1 midway through the period, chasing Husso.

Golden Knights 3, Blue Jackets

2: Paul Cotter scored in his firstever shootout attempt and visiting Vegas beat Columbus to stop a two-game skid.

William Karlsson and William Carrier scored in regulation for Pacific Division-leading Vegas and Logan Thompson stopped 26 shots.

Lightning 6, Sabres 5: Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the game 2:44 into overtime to give Tampa Bay road win over Buffalo.

Brayden Point also had two goals, Brandon Hagel had a goal and an assist, and Corey Perry also scored for the Lightning, who rallied from two goals down in the third period to force overtime. Nikita Kucherov and Mikhail Sergachev each had three assists, and Stamkos added one for a three-point night. Devils 5, Rangers 3: Jack Hughes and Michael McLeod scored in the second period, Vitek Vanecek stopped 35 shots and visiting New Jersey rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat New York.

Stars 4, Blues 1: Wyatt Johnston had a goal and an assist as Dallas beat host St. Louis.
