Maple Leafs’ two late goals sink Sharks

Pierre Engvall scored with 2:27 left, Mitch Marner followed with an empty-net goal to stretch his point streak to a franchise-record-tying 18 games, and the Maple Leafs beat the Sharks 3-1 in Toronto on Wednesday.

Auston Matthews also scored and Ilya Samsonov had 23 saves for Toronto, which improved to 8-0-2 over its past 10 games and to 11-1-4 over its past 16.

Matt Nieto scored and Aaron Dell stopped 29 shots for the Sharks, who have lost four of their past five.

Engvall fired home his third goal of the season off a rebound after the Sharks committed a turnover in the neutral zone to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead.

Marner then had two chances at the empty net before finally burying his eighth with 1:11 left in the third for his record-tying point that was saluted by the crowd at Scotiabank Arena. Rangers 3, Senators 1: Jimmy Vesey and Barclay Goodrow gave New York a two-goal lead midway through the second period as the Rangers dealt Ottawa — which hosts the Sharks on Saturday — its seventh loss in its past eight home games.

Chris Kreider also scored and Ryan Lindgren had three assists to help the Rangers snap a threegame skid — including the last two in which they gave up multigoal leads at home.

Sabres 5, Red Wings 4: Jack Quinn scored the only goal in the shootout round as Buffalo beat host Detroit despite squanderin­g a three-goal, third-period lead.

Dylan Cozens had the second two-goal game of his career and Craig Anderson made 40 saves and collected an assist for the Sabres.

Briefly: Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang will be out indefinite­ly after suffering a stroke for a second time. Letang, 35, reported feeling ill Monday and was taken to the hospital, where tests confirmed the stroke. “I am optimistic that I will be back on the ice soon,” Letang said in a release . ... The Tempe (Ariz.) City Council approved a proposal for an Arizona Coyotes arena and entertainm­ent district, clearing the way for a public vote on the project next year. The team is playing this season at Arizona State's 5,000-seat Mullett Arena, by far the NHL's smallest arena. ... The Hurricanes acquired defenseman Zach Hayes from the Golden Knights for future considerat­ions.
