Fest adds restored theater as venue

- — G. Allen Johnson

George A. Romero’s original “Night of the Living Dead” with a live score performed by Sleepbomb; a new film by Christopher Coppola with the director in person; two live stage parodies of classic “Twilight Zone” episodes; and the reopening of a century-plus-old movie theater that has been shuttered throughout the pandemic highlight the 19th Another Hole in the Head Film Festival.

The horror and thriller genre festival from S.F. IndieFest starts Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Roxie Theater with five films by Latin filmmakers in a shorts program titled “Satanic Hispanics.” It ends with two nights at Stage Werks, Dec. 14-15, with Bay Area-based theater company Dreams on the Rocks Productions performing parodies of the popular anthology series’ “Eye of the Beholder” and “Nightmare as a Child.”

Perhaps the biggest news is the return of the 4 Star Theater, which is set to host AHITH Dec. 9-11. The Richmond District theater, which has been shuttered since March 2020, is under new ownership and has been fully restored and revamped, with a cafe and art gallery space as well as a new screen and projection system. The festival’s first screening: “The Curse,” a lost film from the late Brazilian horror master José Mojica Marins (“Coffin Joe”) that began filming in the 1960s, resumed shooting in the 1980s and was completed only recently by producer Eugenio Puppo.

Another Hole in the Head Film Festival: Thursday, Dec. 1, through Dec. 15. $15-$30. Roxie Theater, 3117 16th St., S.F.; 4 Star Theater, 2200 Clement St., S.F.; Stage Werx, 446 Valencia St., S.F. www.ahith.com
