Our world lost a kind and loving soul when Matthew Harold Davey passed through the gates of heaven on November 15, 2022. The youngest child of Thomas Francis Davey and Christina Chaffee Davey, he was born and raised in Sunnyvale, California before it became home to Silicon Valley. The Santa Clara Valley in those days was replete with beautiful orchards and flower gardens that somewhat quickly evaporated and were replaced with the world’s center of Tech. Matthew grew up surrounded by that formerly ever-present natural beauty, his family home nestled between fruit trees and nurseries. After finishing high school at Fremont High and spending time in Junior college, he migrated to far Northern California where he employed his childhood love of agriculture and turned it into a gardening business and a lifelong love of nature. His connection to nature served as the foundation to his awareness of the human condition. Music, also, was a major part of his life. He was meaningfully influenced by the unique words and music of Bob Dylan. He was able to translate that awareness to paper and was a brilliant writer and poet. He left us with five published collections of his poetry. His insight inspired all those who knew him. At one time he wrote, “In the evening of my life In the morning of my day I stood and was anonymous Wondering what to do Or say Then it occurred to me Life, true life is Just waiting to begin And the Journey of Life Is the journey within.” He guided all of us in the ways of nature and of mankind. His loving nature was inspirational. His kindness was manifest. He leaves behind his brothers and sisters, Timothy Davey (Susan), Mary Green Swig (Steven), Theresa Donnelly (Robert), and Thomas Davey (Cathy) and many nieces and nephews. His life is a testimony to joy and struggle, to hope and to peace. He will be so much missed and his memory will be treasured.
