Ferry Building seating, plaza, clock tower to get makeover
New renderings show what San Francisco's Ferry Building will look like after planned renovations begin later this year — including painting the iconic clock tower.
The landmark building will undergo “a series of enhancements” that include adding more outdoor and indoor seating options on the north side, as well as repairing the 50-year-old plaza behind the building into a “beautifully enhanced, pedestrian-friendly walkway” with more seating and a retail kiosk, according to the Ferry Building's website.
Construction is set to begin later this year and will last about two years, officials said.
The enhancements come four years after officials repaired portions of the Ferry Building's facade and repainted the entire exterior in a custom-blended “Ferry Building Gray” that “represents the varied warm gray tones of the building's original Colusa sandstone,” according to the Ferry Building website.
This clock tower will also be painted in the “Ferry Building Gray” color by the end of 2023.
The popular farmers market and marketplace are expected to continue during construction.
The renderings released on the San Francisco Ferry Building's website show more outdoor seating along the Embarcadero with new lighting and canopies.
Officials plan to build a “Bay Front Kitchen” near the back of the building with large operable windows that will give indoor and outdoor diners a front seat view of the Bay Bridge. The space is expected to fit two large waterfront restaurants and more storefronts.
The plaza behind the building near the Ferry Terminal, which sits empty except for the Saturday farmers' market, will be given a modern look with new electrical systems, lighting, more outdoor seating and a retail kiosk, officials said.
