No. 1 Houston falls at home to Temple

Damian Dunn scored 16 points and made the goahead free throw, Kur Jongkuch blocked Houston’s go-ahead attempt in the final seconds and visiting Temple held on to defeat the top-ranked Cougars 56-55 on Sunday.

Temple improved to 318 against No. 1-ranked teams. The Owls (12-9, 6-2 AAC) earned their first win over a No. 1 team since a 77-69 win at Cincinnati on Feb. 20, 2000.

Zach Hicks added 12 points for Temple, which snapped a six-game losing streak to Houston (18-2, 6-1). The Owls shot 31% but were 20-for- 22 from the free throw line.

Jamal Shead scored 13 points, and Marcus Sasser added 12 points for Houston. #3 Purdue 58, Maryland

55: Zach Edey had 24 points and 16 rebounds and Braden Smith’s two free throws with 3.9 seconds left helped the host Boilermake­rs (19-1, 8-1 Big Ten) fend off a second-half charge from the Terrapins (12-7, 3-5). #15 UConn 86, Butler 56:

Jordan Hawkins scored 20 points and the host Huskies (16-5, 5-5 Big East) snapped a three-game losing streak by routing the Bulldogs (11-10, 3-7). Women #1 South Carolina 92, Arkansas 46: Aliyah Boston had her record-setting 73rd double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds as the Gamecocks (20-0, 8-0 SEC) defeated the visiting Razorbacks (17-5, 4-3).

Zia Cooke scored 24 points to lead the Gamecocks, who won their 26th straight and seventh in a row over the Razorbacks.

#7 Notre Dame 76, Virginia 54: Sonia Citron scored 20 points, hitting a career-high six 3-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Fighting Irish (16-2, 7-1 ACC) rout the visiting Cavaliers (14-6, 3-6).

#9 UCLA 73, Washington State 66: Emily Bessoir scored 13 points and the Bruins (17-3, 6-2 Pac-12) beat the host Cougars (13-7, 3-5).

#11 Maryland 69, Nebraska 54: Sophomore Shyanne Sellers finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds and the Terrapins (16-4, 7-2 Big Ten) never trailed against the host Cornhusker­s (12-8, 4-5).

#12 Virginia Tech 74, Wake Forest 57: Elizabeth Kitley had 28 points and 12 rebounds, and the Hokies (16-3, 6-3 ACC) withstood a big third-quarter rally to beat the visiting Demon Deacons (11-9, 2-7).

#13 Duke 62, Syracuse 50: Celeste Taylor scored 15 points, turning consecutiv­e turnovers into late baskets and the host Blue Devils (17-2, 7-1 ACC) turned back Syracuse (13-7, 4-5).

#19 Arizona 80, Arizona State 67: Madison Conner came off the bench to score 16 points, Esmery Martinez posted her fifth double-double of the season and the Wildcats (15-4, 5-3 Pac-12) cruised past the host Sun Devils (7-10, 0-8).
