Shiffrin’s chase of World Cup record stalls in Italy

-

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin’s pursuit of a record 83rd World Cup win will move on to the next stop on the circuit.

Shiffrin finished seventh in a super-G on Sunday in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy, 0.62 of a second behind race winner Ragnhild Mowinckel, to mark the third straight event in Cortina this weekend that she missed out on the podium.

Her next chance to break a tie with former teammate Lindsey Vonn for the women’s record will come in a giant slalom at the Kronplatz resort in nearby San Vigilio di Marebbe on Tuesday.

Mowinckel finished 0.30 of a second ahead of Cornelia Huetter and 0.47 of a second ahead of Marta Bassino on the course that will be used for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

Italian standout Sofia Goggia sat out the race following a fall a day earlier, due to soreness in her right knee.

Shiffrin was on pace to finish on the podium until she veered wide off the racing line toward the end of her run just before the concluding jump into the finish area. She shook her head slightly upon seeing her time, which at that point was good for second place behind Bassino.

“I made a little error with my timing on the last turn on the course,” Shiffrin said. “And of course it’s quite flat down here so you lose some speed. But it was quite a strong run.”

• Swiss skier Daniel Yule won a men’s World Cup slalom in Kitzbuehel, Austria, after first-run leader Manuel Feller straddled a gate and failed to finish his home race.

Yule ranked only seventh after the opening run, but he posted the third-fastest time in the second and then saw the top six fail to beat his leading time on the icy Ganslern course. Soccer: Eddie Nketiah kept Arsenal’s English Premier League title challenge on track with two goals as the Gunners beat Manchester United 3-2 in a pulsating game at the Emirates Stadium.

Nketiah netted the winner in injury time with a back-heeled flick after a shot from Martin Odegaard to secure a crucial victory that keeps Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City with a game in hand.

• Erling Haaland scored his fourth hat trick of the EPL season to lead Manchester City to a 3-0 home win over Wolverhampton. The Norway striker’s three-goal burst in a 14-minute spell either side of halftime lifted him to 25 for the season. That is more than any player managed last season, when Mohamed Salah and Son Heungmin shared the Golden Boot with 23 goals . ... Leeds’ winless run in the EPL moved to six matches after being held to a 0-0 draw by Brentford at Elland Road.

• Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in his Saudi Pro League debut for Al Nassr, but his presence electrified fans at King Saud University Stadium as the team beat Ettifaq 1-0 to retake first place.

Talisca headed the winner in the 31st minute when Abdulmajeed Al-Sulaiheem’s cross was too high for Ronaldo, who didn’t seem to mind as he wheeled around to celebrate with the Brazilian midfielder and the rest of his new teammates.

Motor sports: Frenchman Sebastien Ogier won the seasonopening Monte Carlo rally in Monaco for a record ninth time, breaking the tie with countryman Sebastien Loeb.

The eight-time world champion Ogier powered his Toyota to victory over defending world champion Kalle Rovanperä of Finland (Toyota) and Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai).
