Stanford up to No. 3; Jones honored

-

Stanford beat two Top 25 teams over the weekend and its reward was a bump from No. 4 to No. 3 in the Associated Press women’s poll.

Guard Haley Jones put together double-doubles in both games as the Cardinal knocked off then-No. 8 Utah 74-62 on Friday night and handled then-No. 24 Colorado 62-49 on Sunday afternoon. Jones had 25 points and 12 rebounds against the Utes and 11 points and 18 boards against the Buffaloes.

Jones’ performance earned her the Pac-12 Player of the Week award. Stanford (19-2, 7-1 Pac-12) switched spots in the AP poll with LSU, which was 19-0 ahead of its game at Alabama on Monday.

Other Pac-12 schools in this week’s AP poll are No. 8 UCLA, No. 9 Utah, No. 19 Arizona and No. 25 Colorado.

— Steve Kroner • For the first time in the 47year history of the AP women’s poll, no team from Texas is in the Top 25.

Texas fell out of Monday’s poll, ending an 835-week run that had at least one team from the Lone Star state in the rankings. From Wayland Baptist, Stephen F. Austin and Baylor appearing in the first poll in 1976 to the Longhorns’ No. 25 ranking last week, there had been at least one team from the state in the poll until now.

South Carolina (20-0), which has 26 consecutive victories dating to its run to the NCAA title last season, remained a unanimous choice for No. 1.

• Santa Clara guard Tess Heal received her seventh WCC Freshman of the Week award. The Australian had a combined 25 points and 10 assists in road wins over San Diego (62-56) and BYU (69-59).
