49ers’ Charles Omenihu arrested
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Charles Omenihu was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence in San Jose.
Omenihu, 25, who has posted bail and is no longer in custody, was arrested in the 300 block of Santana Row after officers responded at 4:39 p.m. to a call from Omenihu’s girlfriend, who said Omenihu had “pushed her to the ground during an argument.”
The woman complained of “pain to her arm,” but declined medical attention. Officers did not observe any injuries. The woman requested an emergency protective restraining order, which was served to Omenihu before he was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. The case will be submitted to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
“We are aware of the matter involving Charles Omenihu and are in the process of gathering further information,” the 49ers said in a statement.
Omenihu, a key reserve, ranked third on the 49ers with 4.5 sacks while making three starts during the regular season. He had two sacks and a forced fumble in San Francisco’s 41-23 wild-card win over Seattle on Jan. 14.
Omenihu returned to the field after suffering an oblique injury in a 19-12 divisional-playoff win against Dallas on Sunday. He had one quarterback hit while playing 15 of 61 snaps. Before Omenihu was arrested, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday morning that he expected Omenihu to play against the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia on Sunday.
Rookie defensive end Drake Jackson likely will play if the 49ers decide to not play Omenihu on Sunday because of his arrest. Jackson, the team’s secondround pick from the 2022 draft, has been inactive for four of the past five games. He had three sacks during the regular season, but none in the final nine games.
