An apparent road rage attack last week in which a man smashed the car window of a food delivery driver with a machete is under investigation, San Jose police said Monday.

The driver called 911 as the attack was underway Jan. 30 at about 6:40 p.m., according to Sgt. Christian Camarillo of the San Jose Police Department.

He told investigators that a man used a machete to break the passenger-side window and then fled, police said.

No injuries were reported. The suspect has not been identified and no arrests have been made, police said Monday.

Jerry Gonzales, the food delivery driver, captured the attack in a dash cam video posted to his social media.

Gonzales told TV station KTVU that he was delivering food near Blossom Hill Road and Snell Avenue when a driver behind him flashed his bright lights.

Gonzales then “tapped my brakes. Saying hey back off,” but the driver proceeded to go around him and cut him off before coming to a stop, Gonzales wrote on a YouTube description.

The driver then get out of the vehicle and grabbed something from his trunk, Gonzales said.

“I couldn’t see what it was. I thought it was a baseball bat or something,” Gonzales told KTVU. He and San Jose police identified the weapon as a machete, which the attacker used to smash Gonzales’ passenger window, he said.

Gonzales said he drove forward and was passed again by the attacker’s car. Gonzales then followed him “so he can’t hurt anybody else,” he said, while reporting the incident in a 911 call.

But the driver then stopped, got out of his vehicle with the machete and approached Gonzales again before returning to his car and fleeing, while Gonzales continued to report the incident over the phone, the video shows.

Officers took a report for brandishing a weapon and vandalism, Camarillo said.

An image posted to Gonzales’ Facebook page shows a damaged window.

Gonzales works for Grubhub, according to police and a company spokesperson.

“The safety of everyone who uses Grubhub is our top priority and nobody should ever have to experience any violation of their personal safety,” the Grubhub spokesperson said Monday.
