Couture’s OT goal caps Sharks rally

-

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Tomas Hertl scored the tying goal with 10.2 seconds left in regulation and Logan Couture got the winner 1:21 into overtime as the San Jose Sharks rallied to beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 Monday night to snap a five-game losing streak.

Steven Lorentz also scored and Erik Karlsson had two assists for San Jose, which was 0-4-1 during its skid. James Reimer had 36 saves.

Nate Schmidt and Nino Niederreiter scored for Winnipeg and David Rittich finished with 21 saves to lose his third straight start (0-2-1).

With the clock winding down in the third period, Karlsson's shot from the right point deflected off Jets defenseman Blake Wheeler in front to Hertl, who fired it past Rittich from the left circle for his 17th of the season.

In overtime, Karlsson sent a lead pass to Couture, who skated in on Rittich on a breakaway, deked and put a backhander through the goalie's fivehole for his 22nd.

Schmidt had given the Jets a 2-1 lead with 5:07 left in the third as he scored from the side of the crease shortly after a Winnipeg power play expired.

Lorentz gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with 5:47 left in the first period after a scramble on the left side following the rebound of Oskar Lindblom's shot from between the circles. It was Lorentz's seventh of the season.

Niederreiter tied it at 6:05 of the second as he got Josh Morrissey's feed between the circles, spun and fired it past Reimer. It was his 19th of the season and 200th of his career.

McDavid scores a pair in Oilers win

Connor McDavid scored twice, giving him an NHL-leading 54 goals this season, and the visiting Edmonton Oilers beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2.

In continuing to make his case for his third Hart MVP Trophy in eight NHL seasons, McDavid upped his league-leading points total to a career-best 124 — one more than he finished with last year — and enjoyed his 12th multi-goal game of the season. McDavid also extended his points streak to 11 games, in which the Oilers' captain has 12 goals and 15 assists.

Derek Ryan also scored and Stuart Skinner stopped 36 shots for the Oilers, who improved to 54-3 in their past 12, and bounced back from a 7-5 loss at Winnipeg on Saturday.

Skinner's best stop came with 4:13 remaining when he reached out to stab Ilya Lyubushkin's shot from the high slot.

O’Reilly out with broken finger

Toronto Maple Leafs center Ryan O'Reilly will be out of action for quite some time because of a broken finger.

O'Reilly is going on long-term injured reserve, coach Sheldon Keefe said Monday. That means the 32-year-old must miss the next 10 games.

He won't be eligible to return until Toronto's game March 29 against Florida at the earliest. The playoffs are set to begin April 17.

The Maple Leafs acquired O'Reilly in a trade with St. Louis last month. He has since put up five points in eight games before taking a puck off his left hand late in the second period of a 4-1 loss Saturday night at Vancouver.

Keefe added Leafs captain John Tavares will be held out of the lineup with an undisclosed ailment when the team visits the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday to wrap up a fivegame road trip.
