Supervisor files to run for state Assembly seat

San Francisco Supervisor Catherine Stefani appears to have set her sights on legislating in Sacramento, and has formed a committee to run for the state Assembly.

Stefani filed paperwork Tuesday to run for the California Legislature next year, presumably in District 19, where she lives. The seat will be open because incumbent Assembly Member Phil Ting is termed out at the end of next year.

Stefani did not immediately respond to a request for comment. She recently changed her Twitter handle from @SupStefani to @Stefani4CA, and the website stefaniforassembly.com was reserved last month, as Mission Local first reported.

The supervisor, who lives in Cow Hollow, is the first highprofile candidate to enter the race for Assembly District 19, which includes much of the city’s west side and Daly City.

Stefani, a moderate Democrat, is a former prosecutor and has served on the Board of Supervisors since early 2018. She’s been elected to two full terms, and was last re-elected to another four-year term in November.

As a supervisor, she has focused on issues like gun-violence prevention and access to abortion and reproductive health care. She does not have to resign from the board to run for Assembly. But she would have to resign if elected to the Assembly, setting the stage for a mayoral appointment to the board.

Stefani would likely be a more moderate legislator than Ting, a progressive who has pursued liberal criminal justice reforms. Stefani, meanwhile, was the first local elected official to endorse the recall of former progressive District Attorney Chesa Boudin last year; Ting opposed the recall.

Stefani’s foray into the Assembly race is one of many dominos expected to fall over the next six months, as local officials lay the groundwork to run for higher office in the state’s 2024 primary.
