Ramey shoots 64 for lead at The Players Championsh­ip

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Chad Ramey managed to avoid stress and bogeys Thursday in The Players Championsh­ip for an 8-under 64, making him an unlikely leader on a TPC Sawgrass course that rarely fails to deliver a surprise.

Ramey had a one-shot lead over two-time major champion Collin Morikawa in mild conditions. Hayden Buckley made an ace on the famed island green at the 17th, a hole he had only seen on TV until he arrived this week for his Players Championsh­ip debut.

Rory McIlroy had his highest score in just over a year. The 2019 Players champion shot a 76.

No. 2 UCLA reaches Pac-12 quarterfin­als

Freshman Amari Bailey scored a season-high 26 points and No. 2 UCLA beat Colorado 80-69 Thursday in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament quarterfin­als.

The Bruins (28-4) kept pushing for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament with their 11th straight win. UCLA has won 25 of 27 games overall, and this was its first victory in Las Vegas in four games.

At Kansas City, No. 3 Kansas advanced in the Big 12 tournament without coach Bill Self.

Kansas officials announced about five hours before tipoff that Self was being treated at the University of Kansas Health System for an undisclose­d illness. The 60-year-old Hall of Fame coach was present for Wednesday's practice at T-Mobile Center and appeared to be in normal condition when speaking with reporters.

Gradey Dick had 18 points, Dajuan Harris Jr. added 13 points and eight assists, and KJ Adams also scored 13 points as the Jayhawks (26-6) beat West Virginia 78-61.

NBA: No charges are immediatel­y being filed against former NBA star Shawn Kemp following his arrest in connection with a drive-by shooting in Washington, prosecutor­s said Thursday.

Kemp, 53, was booked shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday for investigat­ion of felony drive-by shooting in Tacoma. He was released by mid-afternoon Thursday, online jail records show. No one was injured in the shooting Wednesday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Toronto guard Fred VanVleet was fined $30,000 by the NBA on Thursday for public criticism of the referee Ben Taylor and his crew.

VanVleet was extremely critical of Taylor after the Raptors' 108-100 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night — not only for being called for a technical foul, but for the disparity in fouls and free throws.

MLB: New York Yankees lefthander Carlos Rodón will begin the season on the injured list due to a left forearm strain.

Rodón will be shut down for 7-10 days, squashing any chance he'll will be ready by opening day, New York general manager Brian Cashman told reporters.

Tennis: Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray remained unbeaten this season in matches that go to a deciding third or fifth set by coming back to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

Stan Wawrinka made a successful return to the hard-court tournament in the California desert after four years away, beating qualifier Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
