Eleanor “Nan” Scarpino

September 6, 1932 - February 20, 2023

-

A bright light peacefully passed away on February 20, 2023 at the age of 90.

Nan was born to Irish immigrant parents, Patrick and Catherine Loughran. A native San Franciscan, she grew up in Noe Valley and attended both St. Paul’s Grammar and High School.

She met the love of her life, Frank Scarpino, in the fifth grade. They dated in high school and married in 1955. In 1960, they moved to Daly City where they raised their children, made amazing memories and lifelong friendships. In 1987 they moved to sunny Redwood City.

Nan worked for over 25 years in the Jefferson Elementary School District where she held several jobs and made many dear friends. Her Catholic faith was a deeply important part of her life. She was a dedicated volunteer at each parish she lived in — St. Paul’s, Holy Angels, St. Andrew’s and St. Pius — donating her time in many ways including making sandwiches for the homeless and bringing communion to the homebound. After retiring, she was an invaluable volunteer for San Mateo’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Assistance League.

Frank and Nan traveled across the US and abroad and enjoyed many cruises with family and friends. Entertaining was second nature to Nan. She was happiest when her house was full of people enjoying her delicious cooking, playing the piano, singing and dancing.

Nan had a special gift of taking care of others, a great sense of humor, a curious mind and lived her life with a positive outlook. She was a loving, caring and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, aunt, godmother and friend. She will be dearly missed.

Nan was preceded in death by her brothers, George, and Francis Loughran, and her son, Daniel, who died shortly after birth. She is survived by her husband, Frank; her children, Tom (Susan), Joan (Nick), Rob (Maria), Sharon (Bob); her grandchildren, Catherine (Erich), Peter (Marah), Giuseppe (Kiara), Jack, Danny (Deirdre), Gina, Kelly and Dominic; her great-grandchildren, Levi, Callie and Joelle; and her sister, Mary O’Keefe.

Friends and family may visit Monday, March 20, from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm at DUGGANS SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City where a Vigil Service will be at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 am at Holy Angels Church, 107 San Pedro Road, Colma.

Donations may be made in Nan’s memory to your favorite charity.
