Dodgers’ Gonsolin to miss opening day due to injury
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Friday that righthander Tony Gonsolin won’t be ready for opening day because of a sprained ankle.
The 28-year-old had his best season in 2022 — earning his first All-Star nod in the process — and finished with a 16-1 record and 2.14 ERA in 130 1/3 innings while giving up just 79 hits.
ELSEWHERE Cowboys, Rush agree on two-year contract
The Dallas Cowboys are resigning quarterback Cooper Rush as Dak Prescott’s backup on a two-year contract.
Rush signed the deal worth up to $6 million Friday after leading Dallas to a 4-1 record when Prescott was out with a broken thumb last season. The Cowboys went on to their second consecutive playoff berth with a 12-5 record, beating Tampa Bay in the wild-card round before a divisional loss to San Francisco.
During Prescott’s absence, Rush threw for 956 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
Also Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Marcus Mariota agreed on a one-year, $5 million contract.
Mariota’s contract is worth up to $8 million, including incentives. Mariota, who was released by Atlanta last month, will be the backup for Jalen Hurts.
At New York, the Jets signed former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard to a fouryear contract.
Multiple reports say the 27year-old Lazard has a contract worth $44 million and includes $22 million guaranteed. Lazard is coming off his best NFL season during which he had personal highs with 60 catches and 788 yards receiving with six touchdowns.
At Kansas City, the Chiefs added two more pieces to their rapidly evolving defense, agreeing to terms with former Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards III and former Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill on one-year deals, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press.
NBA: The NBA fined Memphis Grizzlies guard-forward Dillon Brooks $35,000 for shoving a camera person on the sideline after chasing a loose ball in a loss in Miami.
Brooks shoved the person with 2:40 left in the second quarter of Memphis’ 138-119 loss in Miami Wednesday night.
At Charlotte, Joel Embiid had 38 points and 13 rebounds in just 29 minutes, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Charlotte Hornets 121-82 for their seventh straight victory.
Tennis: Aryna Sabalenka defeated Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-3 to move into the BNP Paribas Open final at Indian Wells.
Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, improved to 17-1 this year.
Boxing: Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez badly missed weight for his scheduled fight with Gabriel Rosado, and their light heavyweight bout has been canceled.
Ramirez (44-1, 30 KOs) was scheduled as the headliner Saturday night at the Pyramid in Long Beach.
The 31-year-old Ramirez, a Mexican fighter who trains in Los Angeles, was a heavy favorite against Rosado, a tough veteran from Philadelphia moving up to light heavyweight for the first time.
