Bettie Noyce

February 7, 1925 - March 7, 2023

-

With great sadness we announce the passing of Bettie Neville Noyce on March 7, 2023 in Ashland, Oregon at age 98.

Preceded in death by beloved husband of 54 years, Donald and by loving sisters Nancy and Dorothy. Survived by children Robert (Linda Vognar), Donald (Patty Doherty) and Nancy (Dawn Lemanne), grandchildren Adam, Jenny, Michael, Christian, Kyle, Breanna, and Elliot, and six great grandchildren.

She was born in Feb 1925 in St. Louis County, Missouri to parents Henry O Neville and Dorothy Hodgson Neville. She met (and married) her chemistry lab TA at Grinnell College. They came to UC Berkeley in 1948, Don as faculty, while Bettie continued working on fatty acid metabolism. Part of her work involved “purifying” samples to get rid of the “junk organelles” such as mitochondria (now known as the actual center of energy metabolism in the cell).

As a young faculty family, they were well known for annual graduate student gatherings and gourmet dinners with faculty. Along with an amazing 1957 European trip, summer camping trips were highlights.

Bettie was well known as an avid chamber musician/ violinist. She played with some quartets lasting decades, and hosted many music weekends.

After retirement, she and Don spent many happy hours investigating family genealogy, writing many monographs on family lineages.

In 2014 Bettie moved to Ashland, enjoying “her castle” with majestic views of the hills and sunsets, flower arranging, and frequent excursions to the local bookstores.

She brought love and kindness along with a generous spirit to everything she did.

Bettie will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Memorial service by zoom 11:30 Sunday Mar 26. Contact ayala@ashlandhavurah. org for details.
