Andrew (Andy) J. Whelan III was born on November 23, 1937 in New York City, son of Andrew and Florence (Gilbert) Whelan. He was educated by Dominicans, Jesuits, and Vincentians, whose guidance helped form his faith life, which was vitally important to him. Andy graduated from St. John’s University in 1959 and moved to San Francisco, arriving in time to attend the Winter Olympics at Lake Tahoe. He found his home in San Francisco and, although blessed to be able to travel frequently to Europe, Australia, and beyond, he loved coming home. Andy founded, built, and ran his firm, Whelan & Associates, in the personnel recruitment industry for 25 years with five offices in California, becoming the largest recruitment firm in the state when he retired in 1992. Andy turned his formidable energy to volunteering at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Davies Hospital, and San Francisco General Hospital bringing the Eucharist to patients there. He continued his love for this at St. Ignatius and Most Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Churches, serving in various capacities for the next 20+ years. After living in San Francisco for over 60 years, Andy moved to Rancho Mirage in the Coachella Valley, living out his final years in a garden apartment, building several new friendships, and enjoying frequent visits from his friends and family in San Francisco and Denver. He is survived by sister Florence, niece Jeanette, nephews Robert, Richard, Andrew and their children. He was particularly grateful for the abundant blessings of friends who so enriched him throughout his surprising life. As he so often said, “It’s all gift.” He eagerly awaits what the next chapter holds. A memorial service will be held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Friday, June 23rd, at 1:00 pm.
