Petaluma police make spate of DUI arrests

A flurry of alcohol-related infraction­s resulted in three collisions and four arrests for driving under the influence in Petaluma within hours of each other over the weekend.

The first of the four arrests followed a three-car collision at the intersecti­on of Lakeville Highway and Casa Grande Road at 7:01 p.m. Saturday, according to a report by Sgt. Mario Giomi of the Petaluma Police Department. Investigat­ing officers determined that one of the drivers, Eladio Castro-Naal, 31, exhibited signs of intoxicati­on. A field test was administer­ed, and he was booked on a DUI charge into Sonoma County Jail.

Two hours later, police responded to a report of a collision at the intersecti­on of Sonoma Mountain Parkway and East Washington Street and found a vehicle had left the roadway and dropped 20 feet down an embankment to the adjacent creek. Its occupant, Luis Garcia, 43, was rescued by responders and taken by ambulance to a hospital. A test determined Garcia was driving under the influence, police say. Upon his release from the hospital, he was booked into Sonoma County Jail.

The third crash happened one hour later around East D and Wilson streets. Responding officers found that a vehicle driven by Miguel Santiago, 27, had struck a parked car. Santiago was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. The final incident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday. An officer on patrol saw a black Tesla driving in the wrong direction on Kentucky Street. The driver, Jeremy Cabrera, 23, exhibited signs of intoxicati­on and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, police say.

Petaluma police did not report any injuries to other victims in the crashes. Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended license.

In Napa County, a driver police suspect was intoxicate­d crashed into a utility pole and died early Sunday.
