CLEVELAND — 49ers rookie Jake Moody missed his potential game-winning 41-yard field goal with six seconds left in Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Browns after head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t try to get in position for a shorter kick.

With 45 seconds left, the 49ers had a timeout and a first down at Cleveland’s 26-yard line. After Jordan Mason’s 3-yard run, however, Shanahan let the clock run before calling a timeout.

Shanahan indicated he wasn’t concerned about getting closer because he thought they were well within Moody’s range. Moody went out to kick on third down with nine seconds left.

“We wanted to leave it there in case there was a bad snap or something so we could spike it and have another play,” Shanahan said.

Rushing success: The Browns didn’t have Pro

Bowl running back Nick Chubb, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2, but they had plenty of success with Jerome Ford (17 carries, 84 yards) and Kareem Hunt (12, 47, TD).

The Browns had 160 rushing yards and averaged 4.7 yards a carry against the NFL’s fourthranked rushing defense, which was allowing 71.8 yards per game and 3.7 yards per carry before playing Cleveland. It was the second-most rushing yards the 49ers had allowed in their past 32 games.

“They schemed us pretty good,” pass rusher Nick Bosa said. “They were getting the edge on us, which is something we take pride in, setting the edges and turning things back into the teeth of our defense. They did a really good job scheming us up.”

The 49ers played without inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury he suffered in practice Thursday.

“You always miss your really good players,” Shanahan said. “Dre is one of the better players in this league.”

Tough call: There was a replay review after Browns QB P.J. Walker was called for intentional grounding in the second quarter. Walker threw the incomplete pass from the Browns’ 24-yard line with the 49ers leading 10-7 with 47 seconds before halftime.

The play was reviewed because Walker flipped the ball underhanded as he was being pressured and Bosa fell on the ball. Shanahan thought Walker fumbled.

“He underhand threw it and I thought it came loose … and he just pushed it,” Shanahan said. “I thought the ball came out very unnaturally for a pass.”
