Most California­ns get another tax extension

In a last-minute announceme­nt Monday, the Internal Revenue Service again extended the federal tax filing deadline for most California­ns in response to the deadly winter storms that pounded the state at the beginning of the year.

The agency said the new deadline is Nov. 16 for businesses and residents in 55 of California’s 58 counties to file 2022 federal tax returns and to make payments. The IRS previously had postponed the deadline to Monday.

California taxes were also due Monday, and the state Franchise Tax Board also extended its filing deadline to Nov. 16.

The counties affected by the IRS announceme­nt include all nine in the Bay Area, the agency said. Residents in only Lassen, Modoc and Shasta counties do not qualify for the new federal extension.

Here’s what you need to know about the new deadline extension:

What is the IRS extension, and what does it affect?

The new deadline to file 2022 federal returns and make payments for most individual­s and businesses is Nov. 16. It applies to:

• Individual income tax returns, normally due April 18; various business returns, typically due March 15 and April 18; and returns of tax-exempt organizati­ons, usually due May 15.

• Contributi­ons to IRAs and health savings accounts.

• Quarterly estimated tax payments, normally due on April 18, June 15 and Sept. 15.

• Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on Jan. 31, April 30 and July 31.

What about state tax returns?

The California Franchise Tax Board also extended the state deadline from Monday to Nov. 16.

Do I have to apply for the IRS extension?

The IRS said it is automatica­lly granting the extension to residents and businesses with an address on record in the 55 California counties affected. Taxpayers do not need to apply or contact the agency.

The counties where the federal extension applies are: Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Plumas, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Siskiyou, Sierra, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Ventura, Yolo and Yuba.
