Former longtime resident of Alamo and Piedmont Annette Hass was a bright, lovable woman who lived to 99. She graduated from Piedmont High School in 1942. Next she earned her degree as a dietitian at University of California Berkeley where she pledged Gamma Phi Beta. She was part of a group of students that graduated from 1945 to 1947. These years were joined as one class called “The War Classes.” Due to World War II, many of her fellow students were drafted and returned as veterans after the war. Annette attended “The War Class 70th Reunion” on October 7, 2016 at Trader Vic’s.

Annette worked for a few years as a hospital dietitian. As a fabulous cook, the dietitian made sure that every meal for her family was well balanced with lots of carrots, celery and, of course, the Hass variety of avocados.

In the garden, she volunteered as a docent at the Berkeley Botanical Gardens. She knew the names of all flowers as she gave tours outside.

Her home always was decorated with spectacular flower arrangements from homegrown flowers. She always had access to the family’s apple, lemon, pomegranate, avocado, Buddha’s hand, plum, and orange trees. The raised planter beds in the family’s backyards were full of fresh vegetables.

The Oakland Repertory Theater sponsored a race between the Piedmont Tennis Team and the Orinda Tennis team by using the third bore to the Caldecott Tunnel in Berkeley, on February 13, 1969. Annette proudly crossed the finish line in first place.

Annette had the pleasure of traveling the entire world on many vacations. She played tennis, did Tai Chi, went on hiking vacations with the Sierra Club, and enjoyed feeding the birds. She attended many San Francisco 49er football games, Oakland and San Francisco symphonies and plays.

She was an avid book reader and always read the local newspapers. She once wrote to the Chronicle Editor: “I would like for Herb Caen to continue having his article on the back page. It is handy and simple. I have read his column for almost 50 years and I really think Herb writes well…Sometimes I disagree but I always chuckle at his cleverness. My nick name for him is, ‘Herbert’s Sherbet’ because it is my favorite breakfast food.”

Her son, Edward Hass, predeceased Annette in death as well as her husband of 65 years Andrew T. Hass, Jr. Annette is survived by twin daughters Claire (Donald) Rossi and Carol (Jim) Perkins. Annette is the grandmother or great grandmother of Jason (Aviva) Rossi, and their children, Alexander and Zachery; Vincent Rossi; Sarah Martin; John (Ashley) Martin and their children Ethan, Ila and Owen.

The family will hold a private memorial service at Mountain View Cemetery.
