Installation may light up Golden Gate Park
A new winter light installation could be coming to Golden Gate Park next winter, courtesy of Gardens of Golden Gate Park.
The partnership between the city’s Recreation and Park Department and the nonprofit San Francisco Botanical Garden Society accepted contractor proposals for the installation from Oct. 12 to Nov. 15. Gardens of Golden Gate Park plans to choose a vendor by the end of the month, according to its request for proposal.
“Our aim is to develop a unique winter lights installation that embodies the mission and brand of the Gardens and is authentic to our local community,” according to its website. “We hope to create a magical atmosphere that will captivate visitors of all ages and invite visitors to explore the beauty of the Gardens after hours.”
The organization is accepting proposals for light installations in the San Francisco Botanical Garden, with the potential to include the Japanese Tea Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers.
If all goes according to plan, the installation will run from late November 2024 through the beginning of January 2025 and could become an annual event.
The installation would join several other wintertime light installations around the Bay Area, including the San Francisco Parks Alliance’s Entwined art installation on the east side of Golden Gate Park and the Fantasy of Lights in Los Gatos.
Gardens of Golden Gate Park expects tickets to cost $28 to $40 each, on the upper end of the spectrum of Bay Area light show prices.
Once a contractor is chosen, city staff will review the proposal to ensure it limits potential disturbances to wildlife, according to Gardens of Golden Gate Park.
