Cal’s collapse cemented by Wood’s 3-pointer at the buzzer

Moses Wood sank a 3pointer from the corner at the horn to lift Washington to a 77-75 win over Cal at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night.

The win was the Huskies’ sixth straight against the Bears and their 10th victory in the past 13 meetings in the series.

Washington (11-7, 3-4 Pac-12) took a 62-55 lead on a 3-pointer by Sahvir Wheeler with 10:13 left but then went scoreless for a five-minute stretch in which Cal took a 65-62 lead on a Keonte Kennedy 3pointer with 5:33 left.

Anthony Kennedy ended the drought with a 3 to tie it at 65-65 with 5:04 left, but Fardaws Aimaq turned in a 3-point play to put the Bears (6-12, 2-5) back in front. Wood hit two free throws near the three-minute mark to trim Washington’s deficit to three, but Jaylon Tyson hit a 3 to make it 73-67.

Wheeler scored at the basket to cut the deficit to four and Woods added two more free throws to make it 73-71 with 32 seconds left. Jalen Cone hit two free throws to push Cal’s lead to 75-71, but Anthony Holland hit a 3 to cut Washington’s deficit to one. Brooks’ layup attempt was blocked by Aimaq with four seconds left. The ball went out of bounds, leading to an inbounds pass to Brooks above the key. He then found Wood in the corner for the game-winning shot.

Washington hit 10-of-35 shots from distance (28.6%) for the game. Brooks led the Huskies with 21 points and seven rebounds. Holland added 14 points off the bench, hitting 4 of 9 from deep, and Wood and Wheeler each added 13 points.

Aimaq led Cal with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tyson and Cone each scored 17.

USF 90 LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 74

Jonathan Mogbo and the Dons continued their strong play in leading from wire-to-wire on the Hilltop.

Mogbo, winner of the past two WCC Player of the Week awards, posted his fifth consecutiv­e doubledoub­le with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also had five assists, two steals and two blocks.

Marcus Williams scored 24 points for the Dons (15-4, 4-0 WCC). Malik Thomas chipped in 13 points and Mike Sharavjamt­s 12.

In beating the Lions (810, 1-3), USF extended its winning streak to seven. It has won 10 of its past 11 games, scoring at least 90 points in five of its past seven games.

The Dons host St. Mary’s (13-6, 4-0) on Saturday night. The winner will own sole possession of first place in the conference.

SANTA CLARA 88 PACIFIC 69

Johnny O’Neil scored 23 points to lead the Broncos’ balanced scoring attack in Stockton.

O’Neil also contribute­d seven rebounds for the Broncos (13-7, 4-1 WCC). Carlos Marshall Jr. and Adama-Alpha Bal each had 12 points as Santa Clara got at least four points from all 10 players who entered into the game.

The Tigers (6-14, 0-5) were led in scoring by Moe Odum, who finished with 21 points and four assists. Pacific also got 14 points from Judson Martindale.

Women SANTA CLARA 92 PEPPERDINE 36

The Broncos went on an early 21-0 run en route to a 92-36 blowout of the Waves at the Leavey Center.

Santa Clara (14-5, 2-2 WCC) scored at least 23 points in each of the first three quarters while simultaneo­usly holding Pepperdine (5-12, 1-3) to eight or fewer.

With 4:45 left in the first quarter, Santa Clara led 8-7. Over the next six minutes of play, stretching into the second quarter, it went on the 21-point run to take control.

Olivia Pollerd scored 23 points to lead the Broncos, Tess Heal added 17 and Emma Shaffer had 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

Santa Clara shot 65.5% from the field, including 45.8% (11-for-24) on 3-pointers. Pepperdine made 25% (12-for-48) of its shots and missed all 13 3-point tries.

ST. MARY’S MATCHUP WITH PORTLAND POSTPONED

Ice storms in and around Portland canceled the Gaels’ flight from the Bay Area and forced a postponeme­nt of Thursday’s game to Monday.

The Gaels (8-9, 1-2 WCC) are still scheduled to play Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash., on Saturday.
