Man injured in shooting at Half Moon Bay housing
A man was injured in a shooting at a farmworker housing development in Half Moon Bay, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Office.
Officers responded just after 7 p.m. Saturday to a report of a shooting around Tea Road and Pear Orchard Way, according to Heather Enders, a spokesperson for the sheriff ’s office. Detectives said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident, Enders said. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday afternoon.
“It is an ongoing investigation and the sheriff ’s office will provide updates as more information becomes available,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release.
The shooting happened within the Moon Ridge community, a housing development for farmworkers at 2001 Miramontes Point Road.
The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries, according to Lyn Hikida, a spokesperson for MidPen Housing, the nonprofit that owns the Moon Ridge development. It was unclear whether the man is a farmworker.
The power at Moon Ridge was out at the time of the shooting due to stormy weather, Hikida said.
Saturday’s shooting happened three days before the first anniversary of the Half Moon Bay mass shootings that killed seven farmworkers on Jan. 23, 2023. The city planned a remembrance ceremony and candlelight vigil Sunday afternoon to honor the victims and survivors.
“It is heartbreaking the sound of gunshots and the tragedy of gun violence has impacted our community on the eve of the oneyear anniversary of the worst mass shooting in the history of the county,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller, whose district includes Half Moon Bay.
Mueller and Hikida said support is being provided to the residents of Moon Ridge. The nonprofit Ayudando Latinos A Soñar is also providing mental health support, said its founder, Belinda Hernandez-Arriaga.
