Unseld Jr. out, Keefe in as Wizards’ coach
Wes Unseld Jr. is out as coach of the Washington Wizards midway through his third season with the team, which has the second-fewest wins in the NBA.
President Michael Winger announced Thursday that Unseld would be transitioning to a front office advisory role. Washington at 7-36 is in 14th place out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference.
The Wizards have lost five in a row and 11 of their past 12 games.
Assistant Brian Keefe was promoted as the interim replacement.
Soccer: After sullying his nation's Women's World Cup victory, former Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales will face trial for kissing forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent at the final.
Investigative judge Francisco de Jorge ruled on Thursday that Rubiales' kiss was “unconsented and carried out unilaterally and in a surprising fashion,” the court said. State prosecutors accused Rubiales of sexual assault and for allegedly trying to coerce Hermoso to publicly support him in the public backlash against him.
Despite initially claiming he was the victim of a campaign led by “false feminists,” Rubiales eventually resigned from his post for his behavior in August during the World Cup final awards ceremony in Sydney. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Biathlon: U.S. Biathlon national champion Joanne Reid was sexually harassed and abused for years by a ski-wax technician while racing on the elite World Cup circuit, a watchdog group that oversees sexabuse allegations in Olympic sports found.
When the two-time Olympian complained, she says she was told his behavior was just part of the male European culture.
An 18-month investigation by the U.S. Center for SafeSport found that Petr “Gara” Garabik had engaged in repeated sexual harassment and unwanted sexual contact with Reid.
The Czech citizen was suspended for six months and put on probation until December 2024.
