Cal, Stanford men lose on road; Gonzaga women rout St. Mary’s

Myles Rice scored 25 points, Isaac Jones added 21 points and nine rebounds and Washington State beat visiting Cal 84-65 for its sixth straight win Thursday night, moving a half-game back of first-place Arizona in the Pac-12.

Rice was 9-for-16 from the floor and Jones went 8-for-10 as the Cougars (19-6, 10-4) won for the ninth time in 10 games. Jaylen Wells and Andrej Jakimovski added 12 points each and Rueben Chinyelu scored 10.

Jaylon Tyson scored 18 points, Rodney Brown Jr. added 12 and Grant Newell 11 for the Bears (1015, 6-8). Fardaws Aimaq pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cal handed WSU a loss at Haas Pavilion in their first meeting Jan. 20, winning 81-75 in overtime, as Tyson scored 30 points and the Cougars blew a sevenpoint lead with two minutes left in regulation.

Cal scored the game’s first basket but did not lead again. Jakimovski hit consecutiv­e 3-pointers to begin a 17-7 run over the final five minutes of the first half for a 36-24 lead.

Washington 85, Stanford 65: Koren Johnson scored 30 points and the host Huskies pulled away early in the second half to beat the Cardinal.

Keion Brooks Jr. scored eight points, including four on back-toback dunks, as Washington opened the second half on a 12-0 run for a 52-38 advantage. Andrej Stojakovic’s 3-pointer cut Stanford’s deficit to 56-47, but the Cardinal didn’t get closer. Brooks’ two-handed, alley-oop dunk stretched the Huskies’ lead to 7957 with about three minutes left.

Brooks finished with 20 points. Johnson was 12-for-18 shooting from the floor, and his 3pointer at the halftime buzzer gave the Huskies a 40-38 lead.

Sahvir Wheeler added 14 points and eight assists for Washington (14-11, 6-8 Pac-12), which has won consecutiv­e games for the first time since beating Oregon State and Arizona State in early January. Braxton Meah grabbed 13 rebounds.

Maxime Raynaud had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Stanford (12-12, 7-7). Brandon Angel also scored 19 points and Stojakovic finished with 10.

Stanford, which in its previous game hit a school-record 19 3pointers in a 99-68 rout of USC, was 8-for-27 from distance against the Huskies. Santa Clara 79, Pacific 52:

Making his second college start, freshman Jake Ensminger posted game highs in points, rebounds and assists as the host Broncos ended a three-game losing streak.

Ensminger, a 6-foot-9 guard from Germany who in his first 25 games hadn’t scored more than 10 points and had been averaging 3.7 per game, dropped in 17 points, collected 10 rebounds and dished out six assists.

Santa Clara (16-10, 7-4 WCC) used a 24-7 first-half run to take control of the game.

Donovan Williams scored 16 to lead the Tigers (6-21, 0-12).

Women

No. 17 Gonzaga 96, St. Mary’s

68: Brynna Maxwell and Kaylynne Truong scored 20 points apiece, Yvonne Ejim returned to post a double-double and the Bulldogs rolled past the host Gaels for their 19th consecutiv­e win.

Gonzaga (25-2, 12-0 WCC) came into Thursday averaging more than 81 points per game and blew by that total on its way to the 28-point win after beating St. Mary’s by 29 in their Jan. 20 matchup.

Truong hit 6 of 9 3-point tries, Maxwell added four more 3s and Ejim, who missed two games while competing with Team Canada in an Olympic qualifying tournament, had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Maud Huijbens scored 15 points, Eliza Hollingswo­rth 12 and Kaylynne’s sister, Kayleigh, had 11.

Zeryhia Aokuso scored 16 points and Emily Foy 13 for the Gaels (10-15, 3-8), who lost their fourth straight.

Gonzaga was 15-for-33 on 3point attempts and shot 50% overall. St. Mary’s made 15 of 28 from beyond the arc, but gave up 37 points off 19 turnovers and was outrebound­ed 44-21, including 21-5 on the offensive boards.

Santa Clara 73, USF 65: Sophomore Tess Heal’s game-high 27 points led the Broncos past the Dons on the Hilltop.

Heal also had a game-high seven assists, grabbed four rebounds and added a block as Santa Clara (20-7, 8-4 WCC) won its fourth straight. Ashley Hiraki added 14 points for the Broncos.

Debora dos Santos had a double-double for USF (11-14, 7-5) with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Jasmine Gayles also scored 16 for the Dons, Luana Leite chipped in 14 and Cami Fulcher 10.
