Commission­er Kliavkoff and Pac-12 agree to part ways

The Pac-12 is parting ways with Commission­er George Kliavkoff after the former MGM executive oversaw the demise of the once-powerful league during a wave of conference realignmen­t last year.

The Pac-12 Board of Directors announced the move Friday in a two-sentence news release, saying the conference and Kliavkoff “mutually agreed to part ways, effective February 29, 2024.”

“More details about new leadership of the Pac-12 will be announced next week,” the release said.

Kliavkoff was hired in 2021 to succeed Larry Scott.

Garoppolo suspended for PED violations

Raiders quarterbac­k Jimmy Garoppolo has been suspended by the NFL for the first two games of next season for violating the performanc­e-enhancing drugs policy of the league and NFL Players Associatio­n.

ESPN also reported Las Vegas is expected to release Garoppolo next month before an $11.25 million roster bonus kicks in.

In other NFL news, former Falcons and 49ers linebacker Fulton Kuykendall died on Thursday at Canton, Ga. Kuykendall is a graduate of St. Patrick's High School in Vallejo and attended UCLA. He was drafted by the Falcons in the sixth round of the 1975 NFL Draft. He was with Atlanta through 1985, then played briefly for the 49ers.

NHL: Filip Zadina had two goals and two assists for a career-high four points in the San Jose Sharks' 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

Luke Kunin also scored twice, Justin Bailey had a goal and two assists for his first career multipoint game.

Golf: Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour and lasted only 24 holes, withdrawin­g Friday at the Genesis Invitation­al in Los Angeles after hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole. PGA official Mark Dusbabek said Woods had an illness, and that it was not related to his ankle or back issues.

College baseball: In a season opener at Sunken Diamond, No. 15 Stanford fell 4-0 to Cal State Fullerton in the first game of a doublehead­er. The Cardinal's Matt Scott struck out nine in 51⁄3 innings but took the loss . ... Adam Shew and Andrew Hazell combined on a five-hitter as USF knocked off Fairleigh Dickinson 4-2. Shew worked six innings for the win and Hazell struck out seven in three innings for the save . ... In Moraga, Oakland's Reggie Bussey went 5-for-5 as the Golden Grizzlies downed St. Mary's 5-0.

Softball: NiJaree Canady worked the final 61⁄3 innings and Ava Gall drove in the game's only run with a first-inning double as Stanford (5-3) topped Tennessee 1-0 at Clearwater, Fla.
