Novato High alum McIntyre wins national swimming titles

Novato High alum Kaley McIntyre was crowned national champion in three individual events at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championsh­ips in Greensboro, N.C.

Competing for NYU, McIntyre won the 100-yard freestyle Saturday night in a Division III-record of 48.79 seconds after capturing the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle earlier in the four-day meet.

She also anchored NYU’s 800 freestyle relay team that won the national title.UC Santa Cruz, the only school represente­d from Northern California, finished 17th in the 400 freestyle relay as Maddy Gruender (TamalpaisM­ill Valley) and Tereza Shea (Terra Linda-San Rafael) teamed with Coralie Norenberg and Pia Davila.

ELSEWHERE Ebobisse’s goal lifts Earthquake­s to win

Jeromy Ebobisse scored one minute after Danny Musovski pulled Seattle even late in the second half, rallying the San Jose Earthquake­s to a 3-2 victory over the Sounders on Saturday night at San Jose.

Defender Vítor Costa de Brito scored in the 42nd minute and Cristian Espinoza followed with a goal a minute later and the Earthquake­s (1-4-0) took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

De Brito used an assist from Bruno Wilson off a corner kick to score his second goal in his fifth career appearance. Espinoza scored with his right foot in close — following a review — giving the Earthquake­s a two-goal lead on the way to their first victory after four straight losses to begin the season.

The Sounders rallied to tie the match in the second half, using a penalty-kick goal by Raúl Ruidíaz in the 72nd minute and the equalizer by Danny Musovski in the 81st.

William Yarbrough stopped five shots in his first career start for the Earthquake­s. Yarbough spent the previous four seasons with the Colorado Rapids, who traded him to San Jose in January.

Soccer: Phoenix Rising took a second-half Panos Armenakas goal and rode that to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Oakland Roots on Saturday.

Roots goalkeeper Paul Blaunchett­e stopped two attempts in the final 15 minutes of the half, and the score remained scoreless into the break.

Phoenix got on the board in the second half through Panos Armenakas in the 48th minute.

The Roots return home to face Las Vegas Saturday at 7 p.m.

Figure skating: American Ilia Malinin is a world champion and a world-record holder. Malinin put on a dominant display that included six quad jumps to snag the men’s singles crown Saturday night at the world championsh­ips at Montreal.

Golf: Jiyai Shin shot a bogeyfree 8-under 63 in Fir Hills Seri Pak Championsh­ip at Palos Verdes Estates for a share of the lead on Saturday. Seven strokes behind second-round leader Malia Nam entering the day, Shin was tied with former UCLA player Alison Lee (68) at 9-under 204.

Tennis: Third-ranked Coco Gauff came from behind in the first set to beat Océane Dodin 6-4, 6-0 on Sunday to advance to the fourth round of the Miami Open.
