Curry reportedly part of U.S. Olympic team for first time

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will be representi­ng USA Basketball as an Olympian for the first time this summer, according to a report from ESPN.

Curry previously represente­d Team USA in internatio­nal play during FIBA World Cups in 2010 and 2014. The Summer Olympics are in Paris from July 26 to Aug. 12. The men’s basketball tournament begins July 27.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is coaching the Americans, for whom Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Haliburton, Jrue Holiday, LeBron James and Jayson Tatum also reportedly will play. For now, Team USA is leaving one roster spot vacant.

An Olympic gold medal is the only significan­t award Curry has not won in his 15-year profession­al career.

Sam Gordon Griffin retires: Blake Griffin announced his retirement Tuesday after a 14-year career that included six All-Star selections, Rookie of the Year honors and a dunk contest victory.

Griffin, 35, was the No. 1 overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2009 and helped rejuvenate the franchise. He was traded to Detroit during the 2018 season and made his final All-Star team in the 2018-19 season when he averaged 24.5 points.

ELSEWHERE McDavid’s 100th assist helps Oilers rip Sharks

Warren Foegele scored twice as the Edmonton Oilers beat the visiting San Jose Sharks 9-2 Monday night.

Connor McDavid had a goal and added his 100th assist of the season, becoming just the fourth player in NHL history to hit the milestone behind Wayne Gretzky (11 times), Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr.

The Sharks have lost four of their last five.

Sabres can coach: The Buffalo Sabres fired head coach Don Granato after he could not stop an NHL-record 13-season playoff drought.

MLB: Whitey Herzog, the Hall of Fame manager who led the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series championsh­ip in the 1980s, died Monday in St. Louis. He was 92 and had been the second-oldest Hall of Famer after Willie Mays, who will turn 93 on May 6.

Herzog managed the Kansas City Royals to three consecutiv­e AL division championsh­ips in the 1970s, then took the Cardinals to the 1982 World Series title with a team he had built while general manager as well.

Erskine dies at 97: Carl Erskine, who pitched two no-hitters as a mainstay on the Brooklyn Dodgers and was a 20-game winner in 1953 when he struck out a then-record 14 in the World Series, died Tuesday. He was 97.

Colleges: Michigan was given three years of probation, fined and hit with recruiting limits by the NCAA after football coaches and staff had impermissi­ble contact with recruits and players under thencoach Jim Harbaugh while access was restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
