Zhang rallies late to beat Sagstrom, ending Korda’s streak

Rose Zhang won the Cognizant Founders Cup on Sunday to end Nelly Korda’s recordtyin­g LPGA Tour winning streak, rallying to beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes.

Zhang birdied four of the final five holes to overcome a three-shot deficit in a thrilling final-round duel with Sagstrom after the two broke away from the field Saturday at Clifton, N.J.

Zhang shot a 6-under 66, birdieing Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18 at Upper Montclair Country Club. Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th in a 69.

Korda, who struggled the final two days after playing magnificen­tly in winning the five straight events she entered, had a second straight 73 and tied for seventh at 7 under.

After her final putt, Zhang bent over and put her hands to her mouth, before walking to hug caddie Oliver Brett.

The two-time NCAA champion at Stanford who won last year at nearby Liberty National in her pro debut finished at 24 under 264 total — the best score in the three years the event has seen.

Zhang shot a 6-under 66, birdieing Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18. Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th in a 69.

In other news, Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championsh­ip for a record fourth time Sunday, overcoming a two-stroke deficit top beat Xander Schauffele by five strokes.

Earthquake­s rally to defeat Colorado

Cristian Espinoza had a goal and an assist, Vitor Costa de Brito added two assists and William Yarbrough had five saves to help the San Jose Earthquake­s rally from a twogoal deficit to beat the Colorado Rapids 3-2 Saturday night at Commerce City, Colo.

San Jose (3-8-1) beat Los Angeles FC 3-1 last time out to snap a five-game winless skid in which the Earthquake­s conceded 14 of their MLS-high 28 goals this season.

Costa de Brito, on the left side, played a cross to a charging Espinoza, who slipped behind a defender an rolled a shot inside the back post to give the Earthquake­s their first lead of the game at 3-2 in the 66th minute.

Colorado (5-4-3) lost for justthe second time in its last seven matches.

In other soccer news, Mukwelle Akale’s goal on 20-yard free kick in the 74th minute lifted New Mexico United a 2-1 victory over the Oakland Roots on Saturday at Albuquerqu­e.

Oakland captain Neveal Hackshaw scored early in the second half to tie the game at 1-1.

The Roots return to the East Bay to host Orange County SC on Saturday.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic put on one of his worst performanc­es at one of his favorite tournament­s as he was upset by 29th-seeded Alejandro Tabilo in the third round of the Italian Open on Sunday.

Djokovic lost his first two service games and went on to lose the match 6-2, 6-3 in just 68 minutes amid boos at the Foro Italico.
