A life of violence
At 19 months old, Reuben Foster was shot by his father while being held by his mother. Since then, trouble and violence have marked the ex-49er’s life.
April 4, 1994: Reuben Foster is born in Roanoke, Ala.
1995: When Reuben is 19 months, his father shoots his ex-girlfriend and Reuben’s mother, Inita Berry Paige, while she is holding Reuben. The bullet passes through Paige’s back and also wounds Reuben in the back. Paige survives. Danny Foster escapes jail in 1996.
2011: Foster verbally commits to play college football at Alabama.
2012: Foster transfers high schools and changes his commitment to Auburn, Alabama’s rival. Foster reveals the switch by dressing his daughter (3 years old at the time, according to Alabama.com) in an Auburn cheerleading costume. Foster also reveals a tattoo of the Auburn logo on his arm.
February 2013: Foster recommits to Alabama.
February 2013: After 16 years on the run, Foster’s father is captured. “Tears pooring!!!,” Foster tweets. “Never knew him but ain’t nothin like a real father when you keep asking Foster side where your dad at and they lie about!!!” Paige tells Alabama.com, “I was relieved and sad all at the (same) time. I was relieved because he got caught but I was sad because some of the pain and memories that our kids will have to go through about it.”
2016: Foster is present at a nightclub during a triple homicide in which one of his friends, Recco Cobb, is shot to death. Police say Foster was not involved. According to Alabama.com, Foster wrote this on his Twitter page: “You my heart dawg my rider bra wherever I go you go wherever you go I go we had a PACK 1Love one for me and one for you brother R.I.P Recco Cobb #OG”
2016: Foster, after an All-America junior season, enters the draft.
March 2017: Foster is kicked out of the NFL combine after a verbal altercation with a male hospital employee. He fails the combine’s drug test.
April 2017: The 49ers select Foster with the 31st pick.
Oct. 2017: Foster and fellow 49ers linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong have guns pointed at them in an attempted robbery after leaving a San Francisco nightclub at 2 a.m.
Jan. 12: Foster is charged in Alabama with a misdemeanor, marijuana possession. The charges are dismissed but he is suspended two games by the NFL.
Feb. 11: Foster is arrested after girlfriend Elissa Ennis tells police that Foster dragged her out of his house by the hair and punched her in the head eight to 10 times. Ennis reportedly was treated for a ruptured eardrum at a nearby hospital.
May 23: Charges related to domestic violence are dropped after Ennis recants her story.
Oct. 12: Foster and Ennis are involved in a domestic disturbance in Santa Clara, police say — an incident that the Chronicle learned of after Foster’s arrest in November. A neighbor calls police to report a loud argument between the couple at their apartment. The 49ers say they had no knowledge of the incident.
Nov. 24: Foster is arrested at the team hotel in Tampa, Fla., on one count of first-degree misdemeanor domestic-violence battery. Police say Foster was involved in a verbal altercation with Ennis during which he slapped her phone from her hand, pushed her in the “chest area” and slapped her across the face.
Last Sunday: The 49ers release Foster.
Tuesday: Washington claims Foster off waivers. Washington is the only team to put a waiver claim on Foster, NFL Network reports.
