Smuin company tries choreography

San Francisco Chronicle - - SATURDAY - — Leba Hertz

Smuin’s 2017 Choreography Showcase is the opportunity for the company’s dancers to prove they can also create a dance.

In this edition, Smuin dancers Tessa Barbour, Erica Felsch, Nicole Haskins, Dustin James, Robert Kretz, Ben NeedhamWood, Rex Wheeler and Smuin alumnus Matthew Linzer all will have pieces performed by the company.

After each performance, audience members will have a chance to ask questions about the choreographer’s process. In addition to the Showcase, Haskins, Needham-Wood and Wheeler have already had their works performed by Smuin as well as other companies. Haskins has received a Fellowship Grant at the New York Choreographic Institute, Needham-Wood has a local Emmy for co-creating the documentary short “BaseBallet,” and Wheeler’s works have been seen at Sacramento Ballet, Ballet Academy East and Slovak National Ballet, to name a few.
