SC’s Jones endures rough trip to Oregon

- By Ray Hacke

Haley Jones had a rough trip to Oregon with Stanford University’s women’s basketball team.

First, the Santa Cruz native was held to just eight points last Thursday as the Cardinal — then ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division I

— got blown out by sixth-ranked Oregon 87- 55 in Eugene. In recording her lowest point total against a Pac-12 Conference opponent and lowest overall since scoring just four in Stanford’s first loss at Texas on Dec. 22, Jones shot 3 for 8 from the field, 2 for 4 from the foul line and missed her sole 3-point attempt.

On the plus side, Jones grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists against the Ducks.

Jones then suffered a devastating injury on Sunday in the Cardinal’s 61-58 win over eighthranked Oregon State in Corvallis.

With Stanford (16-2, 5-1 Pac-12) leading 42- 40 in the third quar

ter, the standout freshman was closely guarding OSU forward Kennedy Brown under the basket when Brown crashed into her while dribbling. Jones went sprawling to the floor as Brown fed the ball to Beavers teammate Patricia Morris for a game-tying bucket.

The raucous packed house of orange- clad fans at OSU’s Gill Coliseum suddenly fell silent as Jones proved unable to stand up under her own power. Stanford’s trainers tended to the 6-foot-1 guard, then helped her off the floor as she received a standing ovation.

Jones did not return to the game.

“She’ll have an MRI when she goes back (to the Bay Area),” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said after the game. “Hopefully, she’ll be all right.”

VanDerveer declined to speculate how a prolonged absence by Jones would affect her team.

“I don’t want to go there,” the coach said. “I just hope she’ll be fine.”

Before going down, Jones had scored eight points on 4- of- 9 shooting from the field. Six of those points came in the first quarter: The former star at prep powerhouse Archbishop Mitty High of San Jose hit a turnaround jumper for Stanford’s first points after OSU opened with a 7- 0 run, then made a layup with 5:12 left to cut the Beavers’ lead to 13- 4.

A short jumper by Jones later in the period brought the Cardinal within five points at 16-11.

Jones did not score again until the third quarter. Her spinning under-handed layup from the low post put Stanford ahead 38-36 and helped swing the game’s momentum in the Cardinal’s favor.

Jones finished with three rebounds, two steals and an assist against Oregon State.
