Santa Cruz’s Zaferes to compete Saturday in Italy

Santa Cruz’s Katie Zaferes leads seven U. S. elite triathlete­s into the Arzachena Triathlon World Cup in Italy on Saturday in the penultimat­e event of the shortened 2020 World Triathlon season.

T he spr int- d ist a nc e race includes a 750- meter swim off the coast of the Italian island, a threelap, 20-kilometer bike and a two-lap, 5-kilometer run finishing at the Parco Riva Azzurra.

T he women race at 10:30 a.m. ( PST), and the men start at 3: 30 p. m. Both races will be broadcast live online at triathlonl­ive.tv.

Zaferes, the 2019 ITU World Triathlon Series champion, will try for her first individual podium of 2020. She placed fifth in Hamburg and 11th in Karlovy Vary. She also helped the U. S. team to silver at the Mixed Relay World Championsh­ips in Hamburg.

USL LEAGUE ONE >> Watsonvill­e High alumnus Giovanni Ramos Godoy scored in the 33rd minute to lead Tucson FC to a 1- 0 win over South Georgia Tormenta FC in Statesboro, Georgia, on Wednesday night in USL League One action.

It was Godoy’s second goal of the season.

Tucson (5- 6- 3) hosts league leading Greenville Triumph SC (10-2-1) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Tormenta fell to 3- 6- 4.

Golf

NCGA CALIFORNIA SENIOR AMATEUR QUALIFYING >> Gomer Piearcy of Aptos advanced from California Senior Amateur qualifying at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton on Wednesday.

Piearcy took third out of eight qualifiers by shooting a 1- over-par 73. Greg Galasso of San Jose was medalist at 67. Larry Salk (72) of Fairfax, Sam Pintar (73) of Studio City, Chris Bailey (73) of El Dorado, Patrick Henry (74) of Elk Grove, Jeff Duncan (74) of Carson City, Nevada, and Dave Bunfill (74) of Plymouth also advanced.

Neil Duffy (79) of Santa Cruz missed the cut.

The 29th annual California Senior Amateur Championsh­ip will be held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach on Nov. 9-11. CALIFORNIA SENIOR WOMEN’S AMATEUR >> Lorri Nieto of Santa Cruz missed the cut at the 42nd California Senior Women’s Amateur Championsh­ip at The

Ranch Course at Alisal in Solvang on Tuesday.

Nieto had a 53- over-par 197 total through 36 holes.

Lara Tennant of Portland, Oregon, won Wednesday with a 3- over 219 total. Lynne Cowan of Rocklin took second at 226 and Jennifer Douglas of Granite Bay was third at 227.

Sailing

FALL 505 REGATTA >> Santa Cruz Yacht Club will host the 2020 Fall 505 Regatta on the Monterey Bay on Saturday and Sunday. Ten races are scheduled for the regatta.

The Internatio­nal 505 is a one- design, two-person monohull planing dinghy, with spinnaker, utilizing a trapeze for the crew.

Racing will be around temporary inflatable buoys and fixed marks in the north end of Monterey Bay. The racing area will be within a three-mile radius of the Walton Lighthouse on the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor west jetty.
