Raiders sign former Cowboys pass rusher
The Raiders will soon get a boost to their pass rush after signing free-agent defensive end David Irving on Tuesday and placing the former Dallas Cowboy on their practice squad.
Meanwhile, the Raiders also activated quarterback Marcus Mariota from the injured reserve list, although it appears as though Nathan Peterman could remain Derek Carr’s backup while Mariota rounds his way back into shape.
The 27-year- old Irving, who had 12½ sacks in 37 games over four seasons with the Cowboys, is coming out of retirement after the NFL reinstated him last week following his indefinite suspension in 2019 for violating the league’s policy on substances of abuse. He immediately set up a visit with the Raiders, and it didn’t take long for the sides to come to an agreement.
The Raiders’ depth along the defensive line took a big hit when Carl Nassib, a highprofile free-agent signing, injured his toe in a win over the Chiefs a week ago. It’s possible Nassib will be placed on injured reserve once Irving is added to the roster. CARDINALS 38, COWBOYS 10 >> Kyler Murray accounted for three touchdowns in his first game back home as a pro, Ezekiel Elliott set up the first two Arizona TDs with fumbles and the Cardinals beat Dallas on Monday night.
The speedy quarterback who won three high school championships and a Big 12 title at the home of the Cowboys improved to 7- 0 as a starter at AT& T Stadium, throwing for two scores despite a rough start through the air and rushing for 74 yards and a TD.
CHIEFS 26, BILLS 17 >> Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire had 161 yards rushing and Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Travis Kelce on Monday, leading Kansas City over Buffalo in a game that was originally scheduled for last Thursday.
Mahomes finished 21 of 26 for 225 yards. His first scoring toss to Kelce was the 90th of his career in his 37th game, breaking the NFL record for fewest games to 90 TD passes. Hall of Famer Dan Marino had the previous mark at 40 games. BEARS SIGN FORMER NOTRE DAME STAR TO PRACTICE SQUAD >> The Chicago Bears signed former Notre Dame star linebacker Manti Teo to their practice squad on Tuesday.
A 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist also known for his internet relationship with a person falsely posing as a woman stricken with leukemia, Teo has made 48 starts and 62 appearances over seven seasons with the then- San Diego Chargers (2013- 16) and New Orleans Saints (201719). He has 307 tackles — 22 for loss — along with 13 pass breakups and two interceptions.
