Ruiz, Ramirez run to victories at Center Meet

Watsonvill­e High freshman Katelynn Ruiz took first place out of 44 runners and helped lead the Wildcatz to the team win in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s third Cypress Division Center Meet on Wednesday.

Ruiz won in 19:38 on Toro Park’s 3-mile course in Salinas.

Christophe­r junior Sarah Arcelo (20:16) took second and Wildcatz junior Dahlia Barranco (21:00) was third.

Senior Dominique Cervantes-Samudio (22:29; ninth) also posted a top-10 finish. Juniors Edith Rodriguez (22:57; 14th) and Ana Ruiz (22:58; 15th) also scored for the Wildcatz.

Watsonvill­e posted a score of 36 and was followed by Santa Catalina (62), Monterey (68), Rancho San Juan (89) and Christophe­r (99) in the standings. PCAL SANTA LUCIA >> St. Francis sophomore Monserrat Ramirez took first place out of 28 runners in the PCAL’s third Santa Lucia Division Center Meet on Wednesday.

Ramirez completed the 3-mile course at Toro Park in 20:00. Pacific Collegiate School sophomore Rosa Paten (21:29) took second and junior teammate Sophie Mateja (22:39) took third.

Junior Analia Avila (25:58; 10th), and sophomores Ariel Ferrell (25:58; 11th) and Maggie Buckley (30:08; 23rd) also scored for the Pumas, who lost 2728 to Anzar.

Juniors Arianna Fernandez (27:27; 16th) and Claire Burke (28:08; 19th) also ran for the Sharks, who have an incomplete team.

Boys cross country

PCAL CYPRESS DIVISION >> St. Francis senior Julian Vargas took third out of 47 runners in the PCAL’s third Cypress Division Center Meet at Toro Park in Salinas on Wednesday.

Vargas completed the 3-mile course in 16:57, finishing behind York senior Michael Julian (15:18) and Marina senior Steven Aspeitia (16:43).

Watsonvill­e senior Sebastian Abonce (17:27) took fourth and senior teammate Emanuel RenteriaGa­rcia

(18:04) took sixth to help the Wildcatz win the meet.

Junior Santiago Ramirez (18:31) took 11th for the Sharks, who had an incomplete squad.

Senior Daniel Mata (18:38; 12th), sophomore Eli Romero (18:49; 14th) and Rodrigo Barranco (18:50) also scored for the Wildcatz.

The Wildcatz (38) were followed in the standings by Soledad (65), Rancho San Juan (68), Monterey (85), York (113) and Pacific Collegiate (127).

Junior Kenzo Miura (19:28; 19th) and freshman Jack McNulty (19:33; 21st) paced the Pumas.

PCAL SANTA LUCIA >> Kirby freshman Roark Anderson took third out of 47 runners in the PCAL’s third Santa Lucia Division Center Meet on Toro Park on Wednesday.

Anderson completed the 3-mile course in 17:49, behind Oakwood teammates Ellis Richardson (17:15) and Vlad Zaitsau (17:43).

Senior Tommy Shaughness­y (19:06) took ninth for the Griffins, who took fourth in the six-team meet. Kirby freshman Wyatt Trigger (20:11) took 15th.

Gonzales (44) won the meet and was followed in the standings by Christophe­r (69), Oakwood (71), Kirby (84), Trinity Christian

(113) and Anzar (147).

Senior Noe Torres (21:29; 26th) and freshman Anthony Toriz (21:56; 27th) competed for Ceiba, which had an incomplete team.

Girls tennis

AT SOQUEL 4, SCOTTS VALLEY 3 >> Aly Kosek won again at No. 4 singles to complete a postponed third set and clinch the Knights’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Wednesday.

Every other match had been completed. And with the match count deadlocked at 3-all, Kosek returned to the court, trailing the Falcons’ Stella Cheney, 4-2 in the third set. Kosek rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Ella Somerville won at No. 2 singles for the Knights and Gabrielle Casper and Veronica Farquhar won singles match for the Falcons at the No. 1 and 3 spots, respective­ly.

Alana Riling and Mia Tomaino, and Ruby Storey and Dani Marlatt won doubles matches for the Knights. Liat Wetstein and Maya Bensen won at No. 3 doubles for the Falcons.

Soquel moves to 4-2 in SCCAL play.

Women’s soccer

UC SANTA CRUZ 2, AT MILLS 0 >> Payton Cichowski’s sixth goal of the season, which came in the 67th minute, held up as the game winner

Wednesday in Oakland.

Rainie Dabbs added an insurance goal on a pass from Fiona Nielsen in the 78th minute.

UCSC held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Cyclones 21-0. Goalie Anais Uriarte made 12 saves for Mills (1-7-0).

UCSC (4-7-2) hosts Occidental (6-2-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Girls volleyball

KIRBY 3, MARINA 1 >> Junior setter Anna Shelton had 15 kills, 17 assists, eight aces and three blocks in the Griffins’ 25-15, 23-25, 2521, 25-18 PCAL Arroyo Division win Wednesday.

Griffins senior outside hitter Juliet McKinney had eight kills, 18 digs, seven aces and five assists; senior outside hitter Sarah Culver had six kills, 13 digs and four aces and senior outside hitter Jamie Sakuma had 11 aces and 19 digs.

Kirby (7-2) hosts Oakwood at Mount Hermon gymnasium on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
