PV boys soccer wins with late PK

Junior midfielder Kristof Garcia scored on a pair of penalty kicks, including the winner in stoppage time, as Pajaro Valley High's boys soccer team, the leader in the Pacific Coast Athletic League's Cypress Division, edged second-place Rancho San Juan 3-2 on Monday.

Senior midfielder Johan Vazquez also scored for Pajaro Valley on a pass from junior midfielder Isaac Rojas.

Junior goalie Damian Rodriguez made five saves for the Grizzlies (13-1-3, 8-1-0), who play at Pacific Grove (1-16-1, 0-9-0) on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.

Rancho San Juan dropped to 9-5-2, 7-2-0.

AT MONTE VISTA CHRISTIAN 8, PACIFIC GROVE 0 >> Seniors Evan Mariscal and Landon Giordano, and freshman Patrick Tracey each scored two goals in the Mustangs' PCAL Cypress Division win Monday.

Freshmen Connor Gillian and Julian Pizarro also scored for the Mustangs (6-7-4, 5-4-1), who play at Gonzales (9-4-3, 5-4-0) on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.

BILLABONG PRO PIPELINE >> Santa Cruz's Nat Young tied for 17th place at the Billabong Pro Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, event No. 1 on the World Surf League's Championsh­ip Tour.

Young was eliminated in Heat 2 of the Round of 32 by Jordy Smith of South Africa, 13.00-1.74, in 4- to 6-foot waves during their 39-minute heat. Young earned 1,330 points for his finish, and Smith advanced to the Round of 16.

Girls soccer

PACIFIC COLLEGIATE 6, AT NORTH

MONTEREY COUNTY 1 >> Anna Walker-Edwards scored the first three goals and assisted on the fourth goal as the Pumas won their PCAL Mission Division match on Monday.

Walker-Edwards scored in the 10th, 15th and 33rd minutes. She also had an assist on the fourth goal.

Ciara Pommerenke had a goal and two assists, and Rosalyn Bourdow had a goal and an assist. Eva Ramirez-Truse also scored a goal, and Chloe Woelfel had an assist.

PCS goalies Claire Protti and Taylin WittenHann­ah each played a half and made a combined five saves.

PCS (5-7-2, 3-4-2) plays at Carmel (8-3-1, 5-2-1) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

AT ST. FRANCIS 5, SANTA CATALINA 0 >> Claire Croghan, Monse Ramirez, Miriam Abonce, Alondra Martinez, and Claire Burke scored goals in the Sharks' PCAL Cypress Division win Monday,

Acosta scored on a pass from Kylie Montenez, but the Grizzlies lost their PCAL Mission Division match Monday.

The Grizzlies (8-7-2, 4-4-1) host Soledad (11-51, 5-4-1) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

AT SOLEDAD 6, MVC 1 >> The Mustangs were without five starters, including goalie Alexa Malaspina, in their PCAL Mission Division loss Monday.

MVC's lone senior Alex Keldsen scored on a penalty kick after freshman Kanaya Falce was fouled inside the box.

MVC (5-9-4, 4-5-2) hosts Carmel in its regular-season finale Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.

Boys basketball

ST. FRANCIS 67, AT KING CITY 47 >> Joseph Rose made six 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 20 points, and the Sharks remained atop the PCAL Cypress Division standings Monday.

King City jumped out to a 21-6 lead, but the Sharks rallied and tied the score

at 21-all by the end of the first quarter. The Sharks scored 28 points in the second quarter, thanks to Diego Ramirez's banked in 3-pointer from 40 feet out at the buzzer, and led at the half.

Sam Braun scored 14 points for St. Francis, Nash Horton scored 13 points, and Junior Ibarra added 10 points.

The Sharks (15-6, 10-1) play at North Salinas (712, 5-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

AT RANCHO SAN JUAN 67, WATSONVILL­E 56 >>

Standout center Brody Legions exited with a knee injury in the first quarter, and the Wildcatz lost their PCAL Cypress Division game Monday and dropped into second place behind St. Francis. Legions' participat­ion is questionab­le for the remainder of the week.

Karlos Corpus scored 18 points to lead the Wildcatz. Tajin Olivas made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points — all in the third quarter. Matthew Gonzalez scored nine points.

Elijah Florez scored 16

points to lead the (12-9, 5-6).

Watsonvill­e (12-9, 9-2) hosts Greenfield (7-14, 3-8) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Girls basketball PCS 42, PAJARO VALLEY 41 >>

Senior guard Malak Ahwal made four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the Pumas' PCAL Santa Lucia Division win Monday.

A free throw from Ahwal with 28 seconds left was the difference, as the Pumas' defense prevented the Grizzlies from shooting a 3-pointer and settled on a layup to close scoring.

Senior Katharina Guth had seven points, nine rebounds, and six steals for PCS. Maiya Armstrong added eight points.

Annel Andrade made three 3-pointer and scored 13 points for the Grizzlies (10-10, 4-3), who played without standout Natasha Santana.

PCS (8-7, 3-3) plays at Rancho San Juan on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Grizzlies host Santa Catalina on Wednesday night.
