MVC rolls to a nonleague softball win over Santa Cruz

Junior Giselle Rocha drove in five runs, and Monte Vista Christian School's softball team earned a 23-3 nonleague win over host Santa Cruz on Thursday.

Rocha finished 4-for-4 batting with a pair of doubles, and scored three runs.

Senior Ivanna Quizon and junior Mae Martin each had two hits, four RBI, and two runs scored. Martin, the winning pitcher, counted a home run among her hits.

Senior Abby Radar had two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored, and senior Nina Hunkel had three hits, including a triple, one RBI, and scored three runs.

Sophomore Sophia Cortes had two hits and scored four runs, and classmate Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had three hits, four of her team's 13 stolen bases, and scored three runs.

The Mustangs scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back.

MVC (6-6, 3-1) hosts Alisal (4-4, 3-1) in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division play on Monday.

Boys tennis

APTOS 7, AT SAN LORENZO VALLEY 0 >> Ben Zaretsky topped Jonah Westburg 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and the Mariners won five matches in the SCCAL meet in straight sets Thursday.

The Cougars forfeited matches at No. 4 singles

and No. 3 doubles.

John McGowan and Jack Eldredge also earned singles wins. Sean Spencer and Nick Hambright, and Adam Allen and Patrick Morrissey earned doubles wins.

Aptos (7-0) has three big matches next week. It plays at third-place Scotts Valley on Monday, hosts secondplac­e Soquel on Tuesday, and hosts Scotts Valley on Thursday.

College baseball CABRILLO 17, AT GAVILAN 13 >>

The Seahawks won their fifth straight Coast Conference game Thursday to remain in second place, one game behind leader Mission.

The Seahawks (17-14, 9-1) have seven games remaining in the regular season. They host the Rams (0-30, 0-13) on Saturday at 1 p.m., before taking on Ohlone (20-10-1, 7-3) and Mission (23-8-1, 10-0) in three-game series on successive weeks.

Boys track and field

SCOTTS VALLEY, MOUNT MADONNA AT APTOS >> The Mariners took first place in eight events Thursday in their SCCAL meet.

Senior Chase JacquesMay­nes took first in both the 800 (2:05.62) and 1,600 (4:56.11), and senior Aidan Buckler took first in the 110 hurdles (17.75) and 300 hurdles (46.57). Senior Tosh Woods took first in the 100 (11.38), and sophomore Colin Dagnall in the 3,200 (11:16.95).

Mariners junior Wade Ellis, freshman DeSean Gomez, junior Joseph McGibben, and Woods teamed for the win in the 4×100 relay (43.97).

Sophomore Brett Swertfager, freshman Brady Bliesner, sophomore Owen Kilian, and freshman Scott Catesi helped Aptos win the 4×400 relay (3:57.40).

Falcons junior Mason Lantz took first in the 200 (52.30).

Girls track and field

SCOTTS VALLEY, MOUNT MADONNA AT APTOS >> The Mariners won six of the nine events held Thursday in the SCCAL meet.

Mariners senior Brooke Willoughby took first in both the 1,600 (5:47.67) and 3,200 (12:24.18).

Senior Lena Manchester took first in the 100 hurdles (15.67), and junior Ella Shoemaker took first in the 300 hurdles (49.38).

Mariners junior Nancy Cervantes, senior Kiley Brown, junior Kaitlyn Murphy, and sophomore Isabelle Graff earned the win in the 4×100 relay (53.59). Junior June Lee, freshman Izzie Schenone, senior Lucy Bowman, and Shoemaker earned Aptos the win in the 4×400 relay (4:43.68).

The Falcons earned wins from sophomore Sarah Drees in the 100 (13.14), junior Ashlyn Boothby in the 400 (59.55), and junior Diana Alivov in the 800 (2:30.81).

High school baseball AT MARINA 18, PAJARO VALLEY 8 >>

The Grizzlies lost their PCAL Cypress Division game on Thursday.

Pajaro Valley plays at Gonzales on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
