PONZIO TO ATTEND SANTA CLARA >> Monte Vista Christian School senior James Ponzio, a finalist in the 1,600-meter race at the upcoming Central Coast Section Championships on Saturday in Gilroy, will attempt to continue his running career at NCAA Division I Santa Clara University in the fall.

He passed on an offer from D-I Saint Mary's College in Moraga, and two D-III programs to attend Santa Clara, where he'll major in bioengineering. He'll try out for the cross country team at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale in October.

“I'm pretty confident I can make the team,” Ponzio said. “If I don't, I'll join their triathlon club or run open races as an independent. … But, for the time being, I'll be dedicating my life to the 8K.”

Ponzio said he was grateful that longtime Broncos coach Felipe Motoro was up front about what he needs to do to make the squad. “I get it. (A lot of) kids want to run in college, and he wants to field a team,” Ponzio said.

Ponzio won the 1,600 title (4:22.77) and took second in the 3,200 (9:58.93) at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Masters meet May 6. He ran a personal-best 4:19.02 in the 1,600 at the CCS Semifinals on Saturday.

Ponzio (15:53.6) took sixth in Division IV at the CCS Cross Country Championships at Crystal Springs in Belmont in the fall.
