Have no fear, Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade is here
After a nearly 20-year hiatus, Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade is back on tour with an almost entirely new lineup, and they will be bringing their blend of psychedelia and progressive rock to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium Saturday.
Claypool is best known as the singer and vocalist of the band Primus, which gained a cult following with steady airplay on MTV and numerous alternative rock stations throughout the '90s and forever cemented their mark on pop culture by recording the theme to “South Park.” The Frog Brigade was a side project formed to play the Mountain Aire Festival in Calaveras County, which culminated in two live albums released in 2001 and a studio record, “Purple Onion,” in 2002.
Apart from some one-off shows, the band has been mostly inactive since 2003 but will be returning with a summer tour titled “Summer of Green.” Apart from Claypool, this iteration of the Frog Brigade features a new lineup consisting of guitarist Sean Lennon (yes, that Sean Lennon), drummer Paulo Baldi of the Les Claypool Fancy Band and Cake, percussionist Mike Dillon who has performed with Ani DiFranco, original Frog Brigade member and saxophonist Skerik, and keyboardist Harry Waters, the son of Pink Floyd songwriter and vocalist Roger Waters. Fittingly, the show will feature a full rendition of Pink Floyd's iconic album “Animals.” Opening will be funk rock legends Fishbone.
The concert is 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Civic, 307 Church St. For ticket information, go to Cityofsantacruz.com.
