SC's Thomson, Friedman earn wins at Surfer's Path Half Marathon
A pair of Santa Cruzans, Jay Thomson and Mari Friedman, earned wins at the Surfer's Path Half Marathon in Santa Cruz on Sunday.
Thomson (1 hour, 11 minutes, and 3 seconds) took first out of 998 finishers. It was his second topthree finish in three years. He took second in 2022 in 1:11:22.
San Francisco's Hanson Leung (1:16:22), Los Altos' Andrew Huch (1:16:24), Watsonville's Bryan Botma (1:17:38), and Madera's Isai Orea (1:17:39) rounded out the top five.
Friedman (1:19:31) was the top female and finished eighth overall.
San Francisco's Emma McCune (1:23:32), Santa Cruz's Thea Amon-Franceschi (1:25:24), Palo Alto's Marisa Kellogg (1:28:19), and Salinas' Lan Clayton (1:30:46) rounded out the top five female finishers.

MILWAUKEE CALLS UP KOENIG >> The Milwaukee Brewers selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Jared Koenig, 30, an Aptos High alum, on Monday.
Koenig, who made his MLB debut with the Oakland A's in 2022, pitched in four games, totaling 4 2/3 innings, with Triple-A Nashville this season and had a 1.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. He gave up one run, two hits, and two walks,
and struck out eight batters.
Cycling
LEVI'S GRAN FONDO >> Santa Cruz's Tobin Ortenblad took 11th out of 83 riders at the Levi's Gran Fondo's The Growler race in Windsor on Saturday. He completed the 138-mile course in 7:08:50 and was the top finisher in the men's under-30 division.
Keegan Swenson (6:43:44) edged Lawrence Naesen (6:43:46) for first
place and a $10,000 payday. Naesen earned $7,500.
Men's tennis
UC SANTA CRUZ 7, AT SCHREINER 2 >> Max Schechter, Cole Reed, Andrew Reyes, Jason Harris, and Mathew Caldwell earned singles wins in straight sets for the Banana Slugs in their match in Kerrville, Texas, on Sunday.
In doubles action, Reed and Schechter won at the No. 1spot and Caldwell and
Harris won at No. 3.
UCSC (9-9) hosts William Jessup (4-6) at Harbor High to celebrate senior day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Women's tennis
UCSC 9, AT SCHREINER 0 >> Hannah Reyna, Victoria Morales, Daniella Rodriquez, Rachel Rompel, Mackenzie Griffin, and Katherine Bergeron won singles matches in straight sets for the Banana Slugs in Kerrville, Texas, on Sunday.
Reyna and Morales, Griffin and Rodriquez, and Bergeron and Rompel won doubles matches.

Men's volleyball UCSC 3, AT UC MERCED 1
>> Riley Norman had 19 kills and two blocks, and the Banana Slugs won 25-12, 1925, 25-17, 25-19 to close the regular season on Saturday.
Nico Espinoza had eight kills and six aces for UCSC (17-10). Leo Tuncer had 13 assists and seven digs, Jalen Suwa had 13 digs, and Andrew Pak had 13 assists.
